There are many factors that separate Buffalo Ridge community from other communities located in Escambia & Santa Rosa Counties, Florida. The two most important ones are without a doubt the location, and for Santa Rosa County and for Florida in general, unusually high elevation.
Buffalo Ridge Location, Landscape and More…
Located between Pace and Chumuckla, Buffalo Ridge is situated on one of the highest points in Santa Rosa County. This community is surrounded by 15,000-acre tree farm and thousands of more acres of undeveloped hills and lowlands surrounding the Escambia River valley. With no street lights within 5 miles of this location, you will be able to observe the beautiful night sky. And yes, the clear and unpolluted view of the stars is the third commodity that makes Buffalo Ridge community so special. Lets’ talk about this interesting fact in more detail…
Stargazing Events in the Pensacola Area
Local Escambia Amateur Astronomers’ Association often organizes free stargazing events at a variety of places in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties such as Pensacola Beach or Grande Lagoon State Park. For those who are not locals, both of these events are taking place directly on or near the Gulf Coast.
During these stargazing events, you can definitely peek into the wonders of the night sky, but your experience will be most likely limited. Brightening of the night sky caused by a street light in nearby beach communities such as Pensacola Beach, Perdido Key and Orange Beach will not allow you to enjoy the full greatness of the night skies.
Unpolluted Dark Skies of Buffalo Ridge
To enjoy the dark skies that are not polluted by artificial light, you need to drive about 30 miles north towards Molino or Wallace/Chumuckla areas where the Buffalo Ridge community is located. These areas are situated in the middle of Northwest Florida pine trees, far enough from city lights of Pace and Pensacola. Here you will be able to enjoy and experience the unpolluted view of night skies.
The first stargazing event in Buffalo Ridge is scheduled for March 2019. Stay tuned to our blog to find out more information. This event will be a great opportunity to observe Buffalo Ridge’s night sky as well as learn about preserving and protecting the nighttime environment.
